Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, Bishop of Koforidua Diocese, has been elected as the Vice President of the Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA) at the just ended 4th General Assembly held from the 2nd-9th May, 2022, in Abuja-Nigeria.

The RECOWA-CERAO comprises 154 Catholic Dioceses spread across 11 Catholic Bishops’ Conferences in 16 countries of Anglophone and Francophone Africa. The 16 countries include Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Guinee, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Mauritania, and Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, and Togo.

Previously Bishop Afrifah had served as the Chairperson of the Biblical, Theological and Liturgical Commission.

Meanwhile, the Agboville Bishop (Ivory Coast), His Exc. Msgr. Alexis Touably Youlo was also elected President of the Regional Bishops’ Conference of West Africa (CEREAO/RECOWA) He succeeds His Exc. Msgr. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, Archbishop of Abuja, who has led the regional body since 2016.

Msgr. Touably Youlo, who previously served as vice-president of CERAO/RECOWA, will serve as its president for a three-year term that can be renewed once.

In a statement issued at the conclusion of the session, stakeholders challenged to live out their Christian vocation to provide a future for young people.

“The members of CEREAO/RECOWA urge “Christian politicians, traditional rulers, technocrats, professionals, especially those in the media, businessmen and women, and indeed all our people, to live their Christian vocation in the fight against corruption, ethnocentrism and all forms of injustice in society”.

The Plenary Assembly was held on the theme: “Fratelli Tutti: a path to build fraternity and lasting peace in West Africa”.

The communiqué emphasises that “Fratelli Tutti can help us in our responsibility to generate effective pastoral government and greater social friendship in West Africa and throughout the world”.
