Bishop George Murray (SJ), has submitted his resignation letter to Pope Francis to resign from the office of the Diocesan Bishop on the grounds of battle against leukemia, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown reports.
The Prelate was, in April 2018 diagnosed with an acute form of Leukemia while he underwent intensive chemotherapy at the Cleveland for a re-occurrence of the condition.

The said time indicated that, he was in remission and doctors “were not recommending a bone marrow transplant”.
Earlier in April this year, the condition surfaced and he resumed treatment , with a third bout conflicting with his ability to perform his tasks as a Bishop.
Monsignor John Zuraw , Chancellor of the Diocese says “with each bout of leukemia, the amount of stamina gets a little lesser. His stamina and energy is not where it should be. He felt at this time, it is best to resign so he can center all of his attention on his health”.
However, Bishop Murray’s letter awaits acceptance from Pope Francis and he will continue discharging his duties as such until his resignation is accepted. The letter will first be sent to the Nuncio to the united states, Archbishop Christophe Pierre to be sent to the Holy See.
He has since 2007, manned the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown which also extends to Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Stark, Portage and Ashtabula counties.
