In a bid to improve literacy skills in children through learning, reading and writing, the Baba Future Leaders Initiative, a community-driven program has embarked on an exercise to take vulnerable children off the streets, by providing them with education and life skills among other educative programmes.
The initiative has set out to provide literacy skills alongside other basic programmes such as arts and culture to children between the ages of nine and sixteen in the Cape Coast municipality.
At a registration exercise in which all protocols were observed that saw over one hundred children enrolling over the course of the day last Saturday, the founder Mr. Victor Beausoleil emphasized that he had the paramount aim of helping children grasp the importance of educational attainment and subsequently becoming lifelong learners.
“I want to see our children read and write and not struggle with word recognition and collaborate with local organizers to raise up the future leaders of our communities”, he reiterated.
QUICK READ
The project which started last year match has seen over 120 children who have already benefitted and successfully completed their study.
Mr. Beausoleil shared that alongside the various programmes rolled out for the children, there is also room for them to obtain, improve, and retain the skills, knowledge, and other resources through support from a large group of community animators and volunteers.
“We consistently seek advice from our Elders and collaborate with local organizers to ensure the initiative is not only sustainable but also impactful”.
Stakeholder engagement
As part of efforts to expand the project, Mr. Beausoleil added that the initiative would be engaging individuals and institutions that may be affected by the decisions it makes or can influence the implementation of its decisions such as traditional rulers and other educational institutions who would provide the ambiance for the smooth running of the programme for the children.
“We have partnered with local community organizers who have helped in diverse ways, and we are looking forward to collaborating with some schools and other stakeholders”.
Commendation
Some of the children expressed gratitude to the Baba Future Leaders Foundation for their timely intervention.
“I am excited to be part of this because I get to learn a lot and I am even given a hot meal and a 5 cedis stipends whenever we attend classes to motivate us”, a participant shared.
