The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has reacted to Ghanaian minister of special development initiatives, Hawa Koomson, who admitted to firing shots at a voter registration centre in an uncommon development.

The Bishops noted with worry the rising violence which could escalate into a devastating issue as the county prepares for its major election in December.

A statement issued to that effect says “the latest action on Monday, July 20, 2020 of the Special Development Initiatives Minister and Member of Parliament for Awutu-Senya East Constituency in the Central Region, Mrs. Mavis Hawa Koomson, is very disturbing. While the police take action on this matter we hope that the appropriate sanctions will be taken against her by the Executive and the Legislature”.

The Bishops are also calling on the government to put appropriate guidelines and measures in place while making reference to a recent recommendation given by “Emile short Commission” to correct political ills in the country.

“We therefore, urge the government to have the courage to implement the Emile Short Commission’s recommendations on the Ayawaso West Wuogon By-Election violence, especially the sections that refer to instances of criminality”, they added.

The Bishops believe the aforementioned action when instituted will serve “as a deterrent to these criminals, who otherwise will continue to act with impunity”.
