Rev. Father Eric Opoku Aning of St. Patrick Parish, Atebubu in the Konongo-Mampong Diocese who doubles as a Tutor at Atebubu College of Education, and Mr. Nsowah Kwasi – Proprietor Prestige School, Amantin, have together paid fines for nine inmates at Ejura Camp Prison to set them free.

According to Rev. Father Eric Opoku Aning, for the past seven years, he celebrates his birthday with inmates at an orphanage home or prison by donating items to them.

He said last year, he visited the Ejura Prison Camp during which he donated bags of rice, sugar, and other stuff.

But after realising that one could pay a fine to release an inmate who has a fine attached to his or her sentence, he decided that for this year, he will celebrate the important day of his life with inmates at the Ejura Prison Camp by further paying the fines for some of them to set them free.

He, therefore, paid GHC3,200 to set four inmates free.

Rev. Father Eric Opoku Aning advised the freed inmates to stay away from social vices and other actions that could land them in trouble.

He also urged the people not to stigmatize the recently released inmates, but rather to encourage them to be law-abiding and hardworking citizens.

Mr Nsowah Kwasi, for one, stated that Matthew 25:36 is his motive for assisting the detainees. “I was naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you cared for Me; I was imprisoned, and you paid me a visit.”

Mr Nsowah Kwasi, who has been contributing stuff to the prison camp, has decided to pay GHC5,000 for the release of five detainees.

He also vowed to provide funding to help former detainees get settled in their new lives after they were released from the detention center for the first month.

He committed to make sure that former inmates are well integrated into society so that they do not revert to their old ways, which could lead to them being sent back to prison.

In their appreciation to the donors, the newly released inmates swore to turn a new page and become law-abiding citizens.
