The Prefect of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Integral Human Development, Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, has paid a glowing tribute to the memory of the late Archbishop of the Cape Archdiocese, Most Rev. Kodwo Amissah urging the faithful and seminarians particularly to emulate his sense of humility and fellow feeling that characterized his life and ministry on earth.
He said the late Archbishop Amissah truly brought to bare what a leader should exhibit in his leadership position by effectively combining religious teachings with the country’s cultural values.
“Archbishop Amissah stood for the total development of a person with respect to how to develop one to effectively fit into his original environment or society and he did that in a humble space.”
He made the remarks during a memorial lecture for the late Archbishop John Kodwo Amissah at the St Peter’s Seminary, Pedu in Cape Coast as part of activities to mark the 90th anniversary celebrations of St. Theresa’s Seminary at Amisano in the Cape Coast Archdiocese.
The lecture was themed “Archbishop John Kodwo Amissah and the Formation of Today’s Seminarian in the context of the Laudato Si.”
THE WORLD TODAY
Cardinal Turkson emphasized that what the late Archbishop stood for during his ministry was still relevant for character formation and it was prudent that such values were integrated into seminary education.
“His values are still relevant that seminaries and education, in general, can tap into it build students holistically to optimize self and society.”
The late Archbishop Kodwo Amissah was born in Elmina and ordained a priesthood on December 11, 1949.
He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Cape Coast and Titular Bishop of Bencenna On March 7, 1957.
During the late 1950s, he also studied the native and controversial custom of pouring libations on important occasions where “explained that before Church leaders determine if this practice is good or bad, they must understand what villagers intend when they pour a libation.”
He died at age 68 in unfortunate gory accident and is buried at the St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in Cape Coast, Ghana.
