The Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Garissa (Kenya) presented by HE Mons. Joseph Alessandro, OFM Cap.

The Holy Father has today February 17th 2022 appointed Rev. Fr. GEORGE MUTHAKA, (Order of Friars Minor Capuchin) Currently Vicar General of Garissa, as Bishop of the same diocese.


Msgr. George Muthaka was born on December 28, 1974 in Ruiru, Kiambu County, in the Archdiocese of Nairobi. He completed his studies of philosophy in Zambia at St. Bonaventure University College in Lusaka (1996-99) and those of theology at Tangaza University College in Nairobi (1999-2003). He made his perpetual vows on 31 August 2002 in the Order of the Capuchin Friars Minor and was ordained a priest on 28 June 2003.

From 2015 to 2017 he obtained the Masters Degree in Church Management at Villanova University (USA) and the Master Degree in Psychology at Divine Mercy University (USA).

He has held the following positions: Parish Vicar of Msabaha Parish in the Diocese of Malindi (2003-2007) and, at the same time, Coordinator of the Diocesan Office of Justice and Peace and Director of Caritas ; Guardian of the St. Bridget Convent in Nairobi and Director of the homonymous pastoral compFr George Muthaka OFMCap lex (2007-2009); Vice Minister Provincial for two consecutive terms (2009-2015).

Since 2017 in the Diocese of Garissa he is Vicar General, Parish Priest of the Cathedral, Diocesan Financial Administrator, Director of Caritas and President of the Diocesan Commission for the Protection of Minors.
