At the conclusion of the SECAM Plenary Assembly, the Bishops of Africa have elected His Excellency Richard Kuuia Baawobr (Missionaries of Africa [M. Afr.]), a Ghanaian Cardinal-elect and the Catholic Bishop of Wa Diocese, as the new President of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM).

He succeeds Cardinal Philippe Nakellentuba Ouédraogo, the Archbishop of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, and becomes the first Ghanaian Prelate to hold such a distinguished position for the Catholic church in Africa.

His Excellence The Most Rev. Lucio Andrice Muandula (Diocese of Xai Xai – Mozambique) was chosen as the second Vice President, while Fridolin Besungu (Archdiocese of Kinshasha – DR Congo) was chosen as the Vice-President.

130 particpants to the 19th Plenary Assembly are from the eight regional organizations that make up the continental symposium, including the Regional Episcopal Conferences of West Africa (RECOWA/CERAO), the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), and the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa Region (ACERAC).

The session was officially opened at the Christ the King Parish Hall on July 26, with Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the guest of honour.

The closing mass is expected to take olace at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in the Accra Archdiocese.

Brief Profile of SECAM President

The Ghanaian Prelate was born on June 21, 1959, in Tom-Zendagangn, Ko, in the Nandom District of the Wa Diocese.

From 1965 to 1972, he attended Tom-Zendagangn for his primary education. From 1971 to 1977, he attended St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary in Wa.

Finally, from 1977 to 1981, he attended Nandom Secondary School for his secondary education.

On July 18, 1987, The Most Rev. Baawobr was ordained as a priest. On May 7, 2017, he was appointed Bishop of Wa.
