Most Rev. Alphonse Asiedu- SVD, Apostolic Vicar of Donkorkrom Vicariate has urged the newly elected executives of the Ghana National Catholic Youth Council (GHANCYC) to think creatively about behavioral change centred activities that would help reform youth of the Church.

He admonished the new executive body to map out activities that are more rooted in the Gospel to shape attitudes in the thick of growing indiscipline among the youth.

To do so, he said, one must remember the elements of catechesis that are most needed in today’s world in shaping attitudes.

“This call demands certain attitudes” on the part of our youth leaders including approachability, warmth and readiness to dialogue”.

The Bishop further noted the importance of belonging to a community, especially in a year marked by isolation and a sense of loneliness and emphasized on the need to be each other’s keeper.

GHANCYC elected new executives in a strict accordance conducted with the new age policy.

The Election formed part of the 45th ANNUAL GENERAL COUNCIL MEETING (AGCM) of GHANCYC which was held at St. Paul’s Catholic Seminary at Sowutuom in the Archdiocese of Accra.

The newly elected executives include Chairperson Joseph Besigrinee from Wa Diocese of the Tamale Province
Vice Chairman Mathias Waliba Justice from Techiman Diocese of the Kumasi Province and Treasurer Godwin Kwame Boateng from Sekondi Takoradi Diocese.

They will be supported by the National Youth Chaplain, Rev. Fr. James Bour-Mensah and the General Secretary, Dennis Appiah-Sasraku whose positions are by appointment by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

Maximum Cooperation

Mr. Joseph Besigrinee, the newly elected Chairperson of GHANCYC in his acceptance speech assured the youth of maximum unity and cooperation to ensure growth.

He appealed to the outgone executives to always open their doors to them.

This year’s AGCM was under the theme, “The Word of God: Christian formation for transformation in Ghana.”

The GHANCYC AGCM brought together delegates from the various Arch/Dioceses to brainstorm on the prospect and issues affecting the Catholic Youth in the Country.

GHANCYC is a unit under the Department of Pastoral Ministry and Evangelisation of the National Catholic Secretariat. GHANCYC was established by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in 1974 with the mandate to train, coordinate, evaluate, report and serve as the official mouthpiece of the Ghanaian Catholic youth at the National level.

It also has the mandate to ensure total formation and growth of the Catholic youth and the church.
