Rev. Fr. Jerome Voure-Dery, OFM, has been laid to rest after a requiem mass was celebrated for him on Friday, 17th July, 2020. The mass was celebrated at the Star of the Sea Cathedral, Takoradi. In attendance were colleague priests, friars, religious and lay faithful.
In his homily, Most Rev. John Afoakwa of the Obuasi diocese first mentioned the pectoral cross he was wearing which was a gift from the late Rev. Fr. Voure-Dery, who was his classmate in the seminary. He said it was gifted to him by Rev. Fr. Voure-Dery when he, Bishop Afoakwa visited Israel in June 2017 when the former was stationed there. Rev. Fr. Voure-Dery even as a seminarian was zealous for the work of God and at the time taught catechism to the Dagaba community in the St. John the Baptist Catholic church, Pedu.
Being sociable, he won the hearts of pilgrims from all over the world and when he met his fellow countrymen, he treated them with special care, affection and attention. He mentioned that they never crossed path after leaving the Seminary until 2017, when they met in Israel. He entreated all present to introspect and question our faithfulness to the mission of Christianity.
Bishop Afoakwa asked that all present take the admonishing from verse 40 of the Gospel reading seriously, which implored us to be prepared, for no one knows the hour at which the son of man will come. He admonished all present, including himself to not take things for granted through procrastination as if each controlled his or her destiny. He mentioned that it was the mercy of God that was keeping us alive and so we need not be hypocritical but sincere, not fearful but ready to witness, not worried but trusting, not greedy but generous and these virtues are what will show our readiness for when the son of man comes.
The mass was concelebrated by Most. Rev. John Afoakwa, colleague priests from Takoradi, Accra and Wa as well as Religious. Also in attendance were family and lay faithful. The late Rev. Jerome Voure-Dery was born on 15th December, 1962. He took his first vow on 25th September, 1991 and final vow on 15th October, 1995. He was ordained priest on 29th June, 1997 and died on 2nd July, 2020 after suffering a heart attack.
